Government

The governing body divided the kingdoms into city states and each kingdom was ruled by kings and priests.
The entire government was ruled entirely by religion which is why priests also ruled kingdoms
Military was not the prime tool when ruling, the higher powers used trade and religion instead

Chandragupta and Chandra Gupta

Chandragupta was a ruthless king that slaughtered his enemies with no remorse becoming emperor by killing another raja, or ruler of another kingdom. He became the supreme ruler of the Indus Valley. Later on in his life his grandchild, Asoka became the emperor.
Chandra Gupta was a completely different ruler and, was a chieftain, before he the took the role of emperor after the leader of the Mauryan people was assassinated

Asoka's Rule

Chandragupta the ruthless, murderous ruler had a grandchild, Asoka. He became India's most famous rulers. Asoka was terrified of war and hated destruction, so he began to study Buddhism, because Buddhism said that killing is wrong. Because he liked Buddhism so much he made it the official religion of his kingdom when he came to power. He had his subjects erect temples full of the Buddhist rules or the dharma
